Top Tips for buying fragrance as a gift.

Buying fragrance as a gift for loved ones can be quite a risky business – what if they hate it? What if you wasted all that money on something they will never wear?! It’s such a personal thing so although a really lovely and thoughtful gift to give someone, it can be a risky one! Here are my top tips on buying fragrance as a gift as there are a few things you can do to make it a little easier and a little more failsafe.

Perfume is such a personal thing to buy someone as there are just so many to choose from, so many different categories and types of scents and you need to know someone relatively well to gauge what kind of perfume may be right for them.

Different fragrances can really evoke emotion, memories and what some may love and it brings them joy and nostalgia, other’s may hate the scent as it reminds them of bad times, perhaps a person they do not like or part of their life they want to move on from. I know as soon as I smell Gucci Rush 2 for example, it transports me back to the city of Bath, going out way too much , drinking pineapple Bacardi breezes and Lancome juicy tubes! Chanel no.5 reminds me of my late mother and some scents I may get a whiff of as I’m walking in a public place and it transports me, but I don’t know where and cannot place how I know it or what/whom it reminds me of. Fragrance is a wondrous thing!

Long story, short, you kind of need to get it right when purchasing fragrance or someone as it really is a personal thing and our tastes are all so different.

If you are wanting to perhaps allow the person to try the scent BEFORE you buy (aka not a surprise!) then you can always purchase a small perfume atomiser that holds a sample size 5ml and fill this with the fragrance for them to try – just a thought and something I have done before. Also these are super handy for travel and handbags!

1.) Play it Safe.

Look at the popular and crowd-pleasing perfumes as opposed to the super niche and unusual as this is a more risky move! Look at some of the best-sellers from different brands – they are popular for a reason.

2.) If you know someone well enough, try and check out what they already wear!

You can kind of gauge what someone may like based on what they already wear. The notes may be very similar throughout their perfume collection, you can see if they like more mainstream scents or some more unusual and niche. Try not to stray too far away from this.

3.) Look at the returns policy.

Different companies and retailers have different returns policies so do check these out and double check before you buy! In case your gift receiver wants to return or swap the perfume , it’s good to know yourself so you can tell them the details when you give the gift, it write it in a card. Most fragrances and beauty needs to be returned as sold aka still in the original wrap and box and unopened.

4.) Try and get a sample to gift with the fragrance

This is a great idea : and some brand offer this anyway if you request. This makes it so easy when gifting a perfume as you give them the full-size one but also a tiny sample so they can spray it and wear it before they open the main (sealed/wrapped) perfume. As explained above a little, this massively helps if they want to return or echahnace as often the perfume needs to be in the same condition as sold. So if they have the sample to try it makes everything SO much easier for everyone involved!

5.) Don’t spend crazy amounts!

Or at least, spend what you can afford. This could (hopefully not) be a risky purchase and you don’t want to spend £200 on a fancy perfume that won’t be appreciated or worn. I, personally would spend around £60-£80 maximum on a perfume as a gift, UNLESS I’m purchasing a fragrance that has been requested or I know they already know and love. Opt for a 30ml or 50ml size instead of the the largest! You know…just in case it’s not the right scent.
